PRESSURE ULCER MANAGEMENT: BEFORE AND AFTER TISSUE BREAKDOWN
Detail Description: |
Pressure ulcers are widely recognized as being a major secondary complication for many patients. It is also known that many factors contribute to a patient’s risk of developing a pressure ulcer. Techniques for identifying and assessing significant risk factors will be discussed. Experiences in the use of interface pressure mapping for research and in clinical practice will be presented. Measuring changes in wound size is challenging because factors such as irregular shape, anatomical location, and difficulty in defining wound boundaries. Pressure ulcer measurement techniques may require physical contact with the wound or be non-contact image-based. An evaluation of traditional and advanced wound measurement techniques will be presented. Many adjuvant therapies for pressure ulcer treatment have been used in the treatment of pressure ulcers. Evidence-based clinical practice guidelines currently support only hydrotherapy and electrical stimulation. These recommended modalities will be discussed, as well as some advances in wound dressings.
